Salmon Of Knowlege
The story of the Salmon of Knowledge (An Bradán Feasa) and the hero Fionn mac Cumhaill (Finn McCool) is widely known. For many years, a druid named Finegas sought to catch this mystical fish. When he finally succeeded, he instructed his young apprentice, Fionn mac Cumhaill, to cook the salmon over the fire—but strictly forbade him from tasting it.
While cooking, Fionn accidentally burned his thumb on the fish’s hot skin. To soothe the pain, he instinctively put his thumb into his mouth. In that very moment, all the wisdom of the Salmon passed to him. From then on, whenever Fionn bit his thumb, he could glimpse the future or find the answer to any question.
Let us delve a little deeper into Irish mythology.
The primary source of information about Connla’s Well and the hazels of wisdom is the Dindsenchas—a vast collection of early Irish lore compiled around the 11th–12th centuries, describing the origins of sacred places, rivers, and hills.
According to these ancient texts:
Connla’s Well is described as a mystical spring in the Celtic Otherworld and is considered the source of the River Shannon. It is sometimes also referred to as Segais, the source of the River Boyne.
The Nine Hazels (Nói cuill): The texts specifically mention the “Nine Hazels of Crimall” (or Buana), which grow around and overhang the well.
The Nuts and the Salmon: Legend tells that the hazelnuts fell into the water, creating ripples or a “purple foam.” The salmon dwelling in the well consumed these nuts and thereby gained Imbas—a magical power of poetic inspiration and foresight.
From the Sinann II text in the Dindsenchas:
“The nine hazels of Crimall the sage
drop their fruits yonder under the well:
they stand by the power of magic spells
under a darksome mist of wizardry.”
Inspired by this poetic imagery, I created the Salmon of Knowledge pendant. Emerging from the depths of the sacred well, the salmon reaches toward three hazelnuts.
A matching set of earrings is also available. Each earring depicts ripples upon the water and three hazelnuts. Together, the pendant and earrings form a complete composition—a magical vision of the sacred well and the nine hazels of wisdom.
This artisan-crafted, sculptural piece is a work of wearable art, meticulously handcrafted from cast, polished sterling silver. The pendant is paired with an 18-inch sterling silver chain.
