Harp
Historical Facts & Inspiration
This sterling silver pendant is inspired by the Royal Portable Irish Harp, crafted in Dublin around 1820 by John Egan. Egan was the official harp maker to King George IV and an innovator who revolutionized music history by creating the modern Irish lever harp. To eliminate heavy pedals, he invented a system of hand-operated levers (ditals) inside the pillar, allowing players to alter string pitch mechanically.
Only a small number of these 90-cm portable harps were produced for 19th-century salons. Today, surviving pieces are preserved in world-renowned museums, such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, as well as in private collections.
Symbolism of Hibernia & Irish Identity
Beyond its musical innovation, the harp is an enduring emblem of Irish identity and national pride. At top of the pillar, Egan adorned the instrument with the figure of Hibernia — the winged genius, protector, and personification of Ireland.
Historically, the winged-maiden harp served as a powerful symbol of Irish independence and resistance against English rule. It became the famous mascot for the Society of United Irishmen, an organization that fought for national sovereignty under the bold motto: "It is new strung and shall be heard."
In this masterpiece, Egan managed to merge ancient Celtic heritage with modern 19th-century innovation — creating a timeless icon of resilience and freedom.
