Children of Lir
The Legend of the Children of Lir
According to Irish mythology, King Lir lived in deep happiness with his beloved wife, Eve, and their four beautiful children: Aodh, Fionnuala, Fiachra, and Conn. But grief struck the kingdom when Eve passed away, leaving Lir heartbroken.
Seeking solace and a mother for his children, Lir married Eve’s sister, Aoife. However, consumed by jealousy over Lir’s profound love for his children, Aoife turned to dark magic. She lured the young prince and princesses to Lough Derravaragh and cast a spell, transforming them into four graceful white swans destined to roam Ireland's waters for 900 long years.
Though robbed of their human forms, the children retained their voices and minds, singing melodies so enchanting that all who heard them found peace and comfort. Centuries later, with the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, the spell was finally broken, and their souls were reunited in eternal peace.
